| The total mass of an aircraft acts vertically downwards through a point called the Centre of Gravity (C of G). The total lift force generated by an aircraft acts through a point called the Centre of Pressure (CP) that is normally positioned to the rear of the C of G position. Bv referring to the illustration, you can see that the lift force produces a turning effect around the C of G that tends to push the aircraft nose down. The thrust force line of action is below the C of G datum and the drag force line of action, and it opposes the turning effect of the lift. This arrangement gives a stable situation, if the engines were to fail, the nose of the aircraft would lower naturally to adopt a glide angle for controlled descent. If the C of G were positioned behind the CP, lift and thrust would act together to push the aircraft’s nose up. In the extreme, the aircraft could pitch up and stall. |
