| The hippocampus and its associated medial temporal lobe memory systems evaluate stimuli received from the outside world and cues about the content they are associated with, while the amygdala is ensuring external stimuli which are matched with internal stimuli concerning with emotions, and emotional conditioning. The cortex receives signals from the brain stem, basal forebrain, amygdala, anterior cingulate, and hypothalamus that receive information from the external or internal world. This connection density allows the prefrontal lobe to undertake executive functions. Structural disorders in brain structures that play a role in information processing processes, together with neurochemical disorders, cause impaired functioning in cognitive functions. |
