Izmir and its surroundings have been shaken by numerous destructive earthquakes since the 1900s. In the last century, there have been 13 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than M4.0. Some of the earthquakes have led to the loss of life and property in the region. The M6.5 earthquake that occurred in Torbalı on March 31, 1928 is the largest of these. This earthquake has affected a very large area, more than 2000 houses have been damaged. The magnitude of the 6 November 1992 earthquake that occurred in the south of Izmir is Mw6.0. The Urla earthquake, which occurred in 2003, was Mw5.7 and caused little damage in Seferihisar.
