Also here, they form synapses with some GABA neurons. GABA neurons suppress dopaminergic neurons leading to nucleus accumbens. If the prefrontal cortex is stimulated, the secretion of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens is reduced. When PCP is given directly to the prefrontal cortex, dopamine secretion is increased in the nucleus accumbens. That is, the decrease in activity in the prefrontal cortex increases the secretion of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens. Clozapine, an atypical antipsychotic drug, can eliminate three types of symptoms of schizophrenia. When clozapine is injected into the monkeys, the secretion of dopamine increases in the prefrontal cortex, resulting in decreased secretion of dopamine in the nucleus accumbens. |
