| It was observed that the prevalence of schizophrenia is higher in people who had been born in the late winter and early spring. «The seasonality effect» is based on the increase in the risk of catching viral disease in these months. Research has supported this finding. In another study, it was suggested that it caused an increase in the the likelihood of schizophrenia if the the mother had had an febrile illness during the second trimester of her pregnancy. It was also found that there was a positive correlation between the occurrence of rubella and toxoplasmosis in pregnancy (2nd trimester) and the prevalence of schizophrenia. Vitamin D deficiency is another environmental factor in increasing the prevalence of schizophrenia. The prevalence of schizophrenia is higher in immigrants in Northern Europe. The researchers have explained this situation with vitamin D deficiency due to the darkness of their skin and the lack of adequate use of sunlight. |
