He was born in 1946 in the Savur District of Mardin, the seventh of eight children of a family of middle-income farmers. According to the testimony of his relative Mithat Sancar, an MP from the HDP, Aziz Sancar’s native language is Arabic and Arabic is spoken in the family. Turkish Arabic is spoken by the mother and father, but Turkish is spoken between the brothers, Aziz Sancar says. In every interview he gives, Sancar emphasizes that he is uncomfortable being shown as Arab and that he is Turkish.
