| Historical studies show that more than 90 tsunamis have occurred in the last 3000 years in our country, which has more than 8300 km of coastline. These have been observed in all the seas surrounding our country, especially the Marmara Sea (Figure 1). Landslides triggered by earthquakes can also lead to tsunamis. The tsunamis that we have the most information about in terms of historical data are the Istanbul earthquakes of 1509 and 1894, Amasya earthquakes of 1598, Eastern Marmara earthquakes of 1963, Erzincan earthquakes of 1939, Bartin earthquakes of 1968. Major earthquakes in the eastern Mediterranean, west of the island of Crete in 365 and east of it in 1303, also caused a tsunami, and their effects extended to Alexandria. It is also the 16th century BC. the collapse of the caldera caused by the eruption of the Santorini Volcano in the Aegean Sea, which is believed to have occurred in the century, led to a tsunami, and the waves that formed made their impact felt throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. |
